Welp, Another Genesee County School Is Closing—Here’s Why
It’s one thing to sit back and watch businesses around us close day after day, but when it’s a school, there’s something a little more heartbreaking about it. A school closing hits differently. It’s not just about empty classrooms. It’s a weird feeling, kind of like part of the community is losing a piece of itself.
We've witnessed more businesses close in the last few years than anyone could have imagined. Genesee County has watched retailers, pharmacies, restaurants, and more close their doors for good.
Flint is no stranger to change or struggle, but seeing schools and long-standing businesses close their doors is a reality many would rather not have to face.
Over the years, Flint has watched not only businesses close, but schools close their doors too, and that just hits different. Now, we're going to see it again as one of the area’s schools announced it was closing for good.
Flint School to Shut Down
According to ABC 12, Flint Community Schools administrators are shutting down Neithercut Elementary to help 'right-size' the district and make things run smoother.
Here’s the problem: Only 159 students are enrolled at Neithercut, which is just 63% of the school’s capacity. So yeah, that’s a problem. With numbers that low, they just can’t afford to keep it open.
This school isn't going to just up and close, students will be able to finish out the rest of the school year.
Next school year, those students will head over to Freeman Elementary, which is just a couple of miles down the road from Neithercut.
