I will never understand why someone would make a fake threat after something as tragic as Sunday’s deadly church attack in Grand Blanc Township. But that’s exactly what’s been happening across Michigan this week.

People are hurting and struggling to come to grips with the recent tragedy, and then some losers come along and decide to pile on with false threats.

Attorney General Dana Nessel isn’t having it, and honestly, rightfully so. She’s making it clear these so-called “pranks” are crimes that come with real consequences.

According to Fox 2 Detroit, Nessel said her office has already seen multiple bomb threats reported around the state following the tragedy, and she wants to make it clear that these so-called “pranks” are actually crimes that carry serious penalties.

Michigan Penalties for Making False Threats

Here’s what you’re looking at if you decide to make one of these threats:

  • Malicious use of a telecommunications device: six-month misdemeanor

  • False report of an explosive device: 10-year felony

  • False report of terrorism: 20-year felony

On top of that, making threats toward or damaging churches, burial grounds, or other religious facilities can land you another 10 years in prison plus big fines.

Nessel’s Warning to Copycats

In the wake of the heartbreaking events in Grand Blanc, the last thing our communities need is fear and disruption from copycat threats. Threats of violence cost local communities tens of thousands of dollars and can put law enforcement at risk. Whether made with the intent to harm or as pranks, they are real crimes with very real consequences.

If you know anything about threats being made, do the right thing and call the police.
