Big Grocery Shopping Change Will Help Thousands of Michigan Families

A major grocery shopping change is making it easier for thousands of Michigan families to buy healthy foods. Meijer has become the first retailer in the state to offer online grocery shopping for WIC participants using their benefits.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services made the announcement on Tuesday (July 28), noting that Michigan's Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program serves more than 187,000 women, infants and children each month by providing healthy foods, nutrition education, and counseling.

WIC Now Available Online at Meijer

The state says adding an online option will give WIC families more convenience while making it easier to access healthy foods.

“WIC beneficiaries were already able to use their WIC cards for in-store shopping at Meijer and offering online shopping will make it even easier for families to buy healthy foods,” said Amy Epkey, MDHHS acting director. “MDHHS is committed to helping residents put food on the table for their families.”

How Online WIC Shopping Works at Meijer

The new online shopping option is now available at all 122 Meijer locations in Michigan. WIC participants can shop for eligible foods online using their WIC card, while also adding other groceries to the same order and paying for those items separately. Families can choose curbside pickup or have their groceries delivered to their homes through Meijer's free home delivery option.

Michigan WIC officials say they plan to expand online shopping to other retailers in the future as part of an effort to make the program more convenient and accessible for families.
