Michigan Restaurant Known for Its Giant 2-lb. Tacos Suddenly Closes
After nearly 20 years in business, a popular restaurant in Southgate, Michigan, has closed its doors for good.
Known for its giant two-pound tacos, insanely large 10-pound burgers, and some of the biggest Bloody Marys around, Mallie's Sports Grill in Southgate is no more.
For years, we've shared stories, photos, and videos of Mallie's Sports Grill. The buzz really started when the restaurant was featured on Man v. Food on The Travel Channel. But the episode didn’t feature the 10-pound burger that we've covered in the past. Nope, they went all out with a 2 1/2-foot-tall, 190-pound burger—officially the world’s biggest burger.
After the episode aired, they must have come to the conclusion that bigger is in fact better because the items on their menu just kept getting bigger and bigger.
According to the Detroit Free Press, after 19 years in business, Mallie’s Sports Grill and Bar in Southgate, located at the corner of Allen Road and Northline, has closed its doors.
Why Did Mallie's Sports Grill in Southgate Close?
Owner Steve Mallie told the Free Press that it was the hardest decision he’s ever had to make, but the restaurant wasn’t doing well, so he was personally funding operations. He also mentioned that he was dealing with ill family members as well.
There may be some confusion about the closure because their Facebook page mentioned they would be closed through December 3 due to plumbing issues.
Mallie's Sports Grill officially closed on the night before Thanksgiving.
