Michigan Eyes Possibility of Toll Roads Throughout the State

A bill that will look into the possibility of toll roads in Michigan is headed to the state Senate.

The Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has approved legislation that calls for a feasibility study to determine if it would be in Michigan's best interest to make certain highways in the state toll roads.

Money collected from tolls would be used to fix Michigan's crumbling roads.

Senator John Bizon of Battle Creek introduced the bill.

“We are simply looking to do a study of various opportunities to increase funding for roads,’’ Bizon said. “There is a great deal of study that needs to go into that to determine if it would be cost-effective to toll.’’

Currently, 35 US states have toll roads. Federal law prohibits tolls from being collected on Interstate highways like I-69 and I-75.

The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.
