Red Flag Warning Issued for Genesee County

A red flag warning has been issued for Genesee County and most of lower Michigan.

Burn restrictions are likely in effect for most of the state as a red flag warning was recently issued.

What is a Red Flag Warning?

According to The Weather Channel, a red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now....or will shortly.

Conditions during a red flag warning include a combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and dry vegetation, which create an increased risk of wildfire ignition and rapid fire spread. When a red flag warning is issued, people need to be vigilant and take precautions to prevent accidental fires.

Today we could see gusts up to 25 mph, humidity as low as 25%, and temps in the mid to upper 60s.

Residents are advised to use caution when camping, grilling, smoking, using a chainsaw, or anything that could potentially cause a spark and ignite a destructive fire.

The red flag warning will remain in effect today for Genesee County and most of lower Michigan until 8 pm.

I find it strange that Michigan is under a red flag warning considering all the rain we endured last week.

I'll be honest, I never heard of a red flag warning for potential fire dangers. I've only heard the term used when it's unsafe to enter Michigan lakes and beachgoers are then prohibited from entering.
