Shady Acres Trailer Park in Flint: 10 Photos from Its Past
For years, Shady Acres mobile home park in Flint was seen as one of Genesee County's biggest eyesores. It’s a shame, though, because it wasn’t really the fault of the people living there. The place went downhill due to poor management and neglect, leaving residents without basic utilities and stuck in a bad situation. Despite all of that, Shady Acres still holds a place in Flint’s history.
The owner abandoned the mobile home park, leaving behind $120,000 in unpaid water and sewer bills and cutting off heat and utilities for the residents. It's hard to believe someone could do that to so many people.
In 2019, Mayor Karen Weaver announced her plan to have the park demolished.
Before its demolition, Shady Acres mobile home park basically turned into a dumping ground. Flint residents used it as their spot to dump cars, tires, furniture, and even hot tubs. The homes were vandalized and literally stripped down to their studs. In its final years, it was the most disgusting place, a far cry from the community it once was.
Over the years, the apocalyptic-looking trailer park was featured in YouTube videos, television news segments, and online articles.
In 2016, Detroit Unseen captured Shady Acres as it sat frozen in time. The photos were taken while the trailer park was still in relatively decent shape, at least compared to the years that followed. You can see those photos below.
Shady Acres mobile home park was located off Western Road, about four miles north of downtown Flint.
