Tips to Keep Your Furnace Working Properly in Cold Temps
Yesterday I got home from work and I thought to myself, what if I get home and my furnace isn't working? That's kind of a scary thought with temps getting so low this week. It's something that happens to people all the time but this is the time of year you want to do everything to possible to avoid being in that situation.
Here are some things you can do to help your furnace deal with extreme cold weather:
- Keep your filter clean - I think this is the biggest no brainer but a lot of people forget to change their air filter regularly. Not changing switching old that old filter can seriously impact on how efficiently your furnace runs.
- Keep vents clear -This is especially important with high-efficiency furnaces because the vents can get clogged with ice and snow. Also keep items away from your vents indoors so you're getting the maximum heat from you your furnace.
- Give your furnace room to breathe - Your furnace needs air to work so give your furnace some space and make sure nothing is blocking it.
- Hold off on setting back your thermostat - this can cause more trouble than it’s worth when it’s excessively cold outside because it will be harder for your furnace to bring your home back up to your desired at-home temperature. Keep your thermostat set at a consistent setting until the weather warms back up to normal temperatures for the season.
