When it comes to voting, most people don't imagine a situation where they could be arrested for simply doing their civic duty of voting. However, one simple thing on your way to the polls could land you a small fine or even jail time.

With election day tomorrow, many people will be making a stop at their local polling location. Some may drive, some may take the bus, and some may even walk. Some people may even rely on ride-share services like Uber and Lyft, but those options are technically illegal.

Is It Illegal to Take an Uber or Lyft to Go Vote in Michigan?

Yes. Currently, in the State of Michigan, it is illegal to pay a ride-share service to take you to your polling location to cast your vote. The "crime" is a misdemeanor offense and could land you up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Even though this sounds crazy, it is a real thing, however, government officials in Michigan are working to change that. House Bill 4568 received final passage through the Michigan Senate on Tuesday, October 24th, 2023. This bill would make it legal for a person in Michigan to pay for a ride to their polling location.

I am not a scholar when it comes to things in the government, but from what I can tell, Gov. Whitmer has not signed the bill yet.
