Still Dry on Sundays? Michigan Town Reconsiders Alcohol Ban
It's hard to believe that in 2025, some towns in Michigan still have an alcohol ban in place. For example, Zeeland, a city in Ottawa County, it's one of the few communities in the state where alcohol sales remain prohibited on Sundays.
Sorry, no Sunday fundays in Zeeland.
However, that could be changing soon as city leaders revisit the longstanding ban.
According to the Holland Sentinel, the city ended its 100-year prohibition in 2006, but Sundays stayed off-limits. Voters even rejected Sunday sales back in 2008, and a 2023 review didn’t change much. Now, council members are taking another look.

Why Local Businesses Want Sunday Alcohol Sales
A recent study found that local businesses are actually on board, with one restaurant pointing out that NFL Sundays are a big missed money-making opportunity.
Zeeland isn’t some snobby town that doesn’t enjoy a cocktail and a good time. Back in 2021, the city got rid of limits on how many places could serve drinks and was one of the first in Michigan to open a social district during the pandemic.

The problem, for some reason, is alcohol on Sundays. In a town of just over 5,500 people, some council members worry that moving forward without public input could upset residents who voted against Sunday sales years ago, while others say the town has changed and Sunday sales could give downtown businesses a boost.
For now, Sundays are still dry. But if the council gives the green light, Zeeland might finally get its long-overdue Sunday fundays.
