Coyotes in Grand Blanc were extremely loud last night.

Every once in a while I'll hear coyotes in the woods behind my house late at night but what I heard last night was like nothing I've ever heard before.

I was sound asleep until a little after 2 am when all of a sudden I was awoken to the sounds of howling and yipping coyotes. It sounded like 20-30 coyotes were in my front yard, it was that loud. I know they weren't in my yard but they were somewhere relatively close. I'm also aware that it wasn't 20-30, that's just what it sounded like to me. People typically overestimate the number of coyotes they hear. So, it was probably only half a dozen or something like that.

For some reason, I'm the only one in my house that even heard them. I don't know how that's possible because it was insanely loud.

I live off Perry Road, near Grand Blanc East Middle School. If you live in that area, there's a good chance you heard them too.

According to Wildlife Help, Coyotes howl and yip primarily to communicate with each other and establish territory. They may bark when they are defending a den or a kill.

I wasn't scared, freaked out, or concerned about the coyotes. I was just super surprised how loud they were. I would have been concerned if I had a pet outside or something.

This is a good reminder to keep an eye your pets when they're in your yard especially when they're out for long periods of time. It's not extremely common but a coyote may snatch up your pet if the opportunity presents itself as an easy one. Urban coyotes have a fierce and formidable reputation as midnight predators that can and will stalk and kill our beloved pets, especially small dogs and outdoor cats.
