In honor of National Relaxation Day (Aug. 15), here’s a list of the cities considered the least relaxed in the U.S. We would have highlighted the cities ranked among the most relaxed, but unfortunately, not a single Michigan city made it into the top 40.

LawnStarter analyzed the 500 largest U.S. cities across eight categories, focusing on 43 stress-related metrics. Key factors included housing affordability, average workday length, depression rates, and access to mental health providers.

The highest-ranked Michigan city was Ann Arbor, which came in at #50, followed by Troy at #54. Unfortunately, this list only gets uglier the further down you go. It looks like Michigan isn’t as chill as I originally thought.

  • #50 - Ann Arbor
  • #54 - Troy
  • #69 - Rochester Hills
  • #99 - Farmington Hills
  • #218 - Livonia
  • #255 - Wyoming
  • #269 - Grand Rapids
  • #279 - Southfield
  • #352 - Sterling Heights
  • #424 - Westland
  • #443 - Lansing
  • #457 - Warren
  • #462 - Dearborn
  • #499 - Detroit
  • #500 - Flint

Well, there you have it. Detroit and Flint are the least relaxed cities in America. It’s surprising to see Michigan—a state known for its serene lakes, expansive forests, and abundant natural beauty—rank so poorly. Despite all that nature has to offer, Michigan is one of the most tense states in the U.S., with 15 cities on the list, most of which ranked toward the bottom.

Who knew that Michigan's cities would make the stress list? Maybe all that natural beauty is just too relaxing for us to handle.
