Michigan isn't necessarily known for its extremely dangerous animals or insects. However, that doesn't mean we are living in a danger-free state.
Depending on how you look at it, deer could be considered the most dangerous animal in Michigan. With the number of deer crossing Michigan roads all the time, it leads to many car accidents every year. These accidents cause damage to vehicles, injuries, and sometimes even deaths.
What is the Most Dangerous Animal in Michigan?
In Michigan, the most dangerous animal in terms of potential harm to humans is the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake. It is the only venomous snake species found in the state.
According to Michigan State University, the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake is a small- to medium-sized snake, with adult lengths averaging 2 to 3 feet. The snake is primarily associated with wetland habitats.
How Venomous is the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake?
While the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake can deliver a venomous bite, its venom is a bit on the mild side compared to some other venomous snakes. Of course, if you do encounter one of these nasty guys, the snakebite should be treated as a medical emergency.
Encounters with these snakes are rare as they typically avoid humans. Most Michiganders will never even encounter the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake in their lifetime.
What Are Some Other Dangerous Animals in Michigan?
- Northern Black Widow Spider (A case could be made for this being the most dangerous as well)
- Black Bear
- Coyote
- Bobcat
- Grey Wolves
- Timber Rattlesnake
- Michigan Wolverines (extremely rare)
Encounters with any of the above are rare but if put in the wrong situation, they can be deadly. If you put me between a Black Bear and the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake, I think I have better chances with a snake. However, that's not the kind of situation we're talking about here.
